My primary research interest is in understanding abnormalities in energy metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction and redox biology in aging, and how it contributes to age-associated abnormalities (including cognition and strength), and predisposes to decline and disease. For over 2 decades I have conducted used a translation approach to investigate mechanisms underlying the deficiency of Glutathione (the most abundant endogenous, intracellular antioxidant) and developed a novel intervention termed GlyNAC to correct its deficiency. The collective breadth of benefits from GlyNAC supplementation ranges from increased length of life and improved brain health and correction of multiple age-associated defects in the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and muscle (rodent studies) to reversal of glutathione deficiency, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and 7 aging hallmarks to improve strength, waist circumference, blood pressure and cognition (human clinical trials). Overall, these findings and discoveries provide proof-of-concept that GlyNAC supplementation improves healthy aging, and health in aging, and has implications for survival. My current work is focused on understanding the effets of GlyNAC supplementation on age-associated abnormalities in cognition, Alzheimer's disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and diabetes, and sacropenia and physical function, while simultaneously investigating underlying mechanisms at the biochemical, metabolic and molecular levels.
