Research Assistant Professor
Wayne State University
Detroit, Michigan, United States
Carrie Leach, Ph.D., M.P.A., is a Research Assistant Professor at the Institute of Gerontology, Director of Community Engagement at the Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES), and Associate Center Director for Community Inclusion at the Center for Health Equity and Community Knowledge in Urban Populations (CHECK-UP) at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
In all of her roles at WSU, she draws on her extensive experience in and principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR) with the aim of increasing University in-reach and fostering community access to the science community whose expertise can be leveraged for public good, and also so that researchers may benefit mutually from the interactions with local stakeholders.
Dr. Leach’s research is inspired by all she has learned from collaborative projects across communities in Michigan over the last 15 years. In examining the needs of more than 5,000 older people, she became interested in the challenges people face related to declining social resources that lead to communication disparities in late old age.
She has been a leader in community engagement with the CURES where she helped establish and maintains a 25-member Community Advisory Board (CAB) to co-lead the community engagement activities of the NIEHS supported P30 center including co-developing multi-media informational materials aimed at improving environmental health literacy of Detroit residents which has resulted in the dissemination of health-protecting information to more than 7,500 Detroiters through face-to-face interactions and thousands more through other media.
In 2020, due to the disconnection with community residents as a result of the pandemic, her focus shifted to digital exclusion and inequity in Detroit.
Carrie is passionate about co-developing strategies with community stakeholders that address communication disparities and improve the flow of and access to health bolstering information, especially for older people.
