Theresa Allison is an MD geriatrician and a PhD ethnomusicologist (music anthropologist) who studies the intersection of music, well-being, dementia and relationships. Her current projects include a longitudinal, ethnographic study of music and daily life in dementia caregiving relationships (PI), qualitative assessment of a piano improvisation training intervention for people with and without mild cognitive impairment (co-Investigator, Julene Johnson, PI), and a mixed methods study of the impact of music on well-being after a new dementia diagnosis (PI). Dr. Allison is a Professor of Medicine in the University of California, San Francisco Division of Geriatrics, with a secondary appointment in Family and Community Medicine. She provides clinical care for older veterans with complex chronic medical conditions through the San Francisco VA Health Care System.
