Dr. Mastel-Smith is a nurse and teaches in the online doctoral program at the University of Texas at Tyler. She has over 30 years' experience in gerontology and served in diverse roles including researcher, academic and public educator, care manager, dementia day center provider, and volunteer. Her goal is to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their caregivers. Dr. Mastel-Smith's current research focuses on reducing stigma towards people with dementia and their care partners. She spearheads an initiative to create a Dementia Friendly Community in Baker County Oregon where she lives.
