Pamela Elfenbein, MSW, PhD, FAGHE, is the Director of the University of North Georgia (UNG) Institute for Healthy Aging where she develops and oversees academic programming, research, and community initiatives designed to enhance quality of life for older adults in the northeast Georgia mountains region. She employs a holistic multidisciplinary and intergenerational approach to healthy aging, health promotion, and disease prevention and seeks new and creative ways to engage students with community. Prior to moving to Georgia she spent many years as a Geriatric Social Worker, and then served as Director of Education and Training at Florida International University’s The Center on Aging.
The UNG Institute for Healthy Aging offers programming, events, and research, including the Generation to Generation Project, Symposia, Virtual Town Halls, PEAKS (a lifelong learning program), and the annual Wisdom Project 2030 leadership educational series. As Director of the Institute for Healthy Aging she also oversees the UNG academic gerontology programs, offering an undergraduate gerontology minor, undergraduate and graduate certificates in gerontology, and the Nexus program in Applied Gerontology.
Dr. Elfenbein has been awarded many federal, state, and foundation funding for her applied program and research initiatives with older adults and their communities. She has created many productive university-community partnerships including workforce development and programs with a focus on elder health promotion and disease prevention programs with funding sources that include USHUD, USAID, Georgia Division of Aging Services,Health Foundation of South Florida, Hospice Foundation of America, and other public and private entities including Thanks Mom and Dad Fund. Dr. Elfenbein has also designed and facilitated educator and service-provider training workshops in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
She is most proud of the students she has mentored, providing them opportunity to engage directly with elders and the community, as they become outstanding human services professionals.
