David R. Buys, PhD, MSPH, CPH, FGSA, is the Associate Vice Provost for Health Sciences and Associate Professor at Mississippi State University. In this role, he ensures the integration, efficiency, and alignment of the University’s health sciences programs with academic standards and community needs. Previously, as the State Health Specialist for MSU Extension and an Associate Professor, Dr. Buys led public health education across Mississippi's 82 counties for over a decade, securing more than $17.5 million in federal funding from agencies like the USDA, CDC, and HRSA.
Dr. Buys specializes in farm stress, nutrition, mental health disparities, vaccine education, rural health, and aging-in-place for older adults. He has authored or co-authored 58 peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, Public Health Nutrition, and The Gerontologist. His education includes medical sociology, health services research, and epidemiology at Mississippi College, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Royal Society for Public Health.
Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Buys received the 2023 Diversity Educator of the Year Award and the Mark E. Keenum Outstanding Extension Faculty Award. He values team accomplishments, such as the USDA-NIFA’s National Partnership Award, two Emmy Awards for the On the Farm film series, and MSU's Community-Engaged Research Award. Dr. Buys is also active in professional associations, including the Gerontological Society of America, and serves as chair-elect of the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
