Dr. Bleijlevens’ research primarily focuses on care and support to improve the daily life of older people and their families. His research takes place at the micro level of care service delivery, that is, in the direct care relationship with older people, their families and professionals. Within this research theme he mainly focused on the prevention and reduction of involuntary treatment (including the use of physical restraints, psychotropic medication, and nonconsensual care), encouraging daily activities and independence, and fall prevention). Together with his team he for example provided insight into the prevalence and associated factors of involuntary treatment, daily activities of older people and the role of nurses in the daily activities of older persons. Moreover he developed and assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of multifaceted interventions aimed at the reduction and prevention of involuntary treatment, changing nursing staff behavior towards encouraging nursing home residents in the daily activities and independence, and fall prevention. Second, he was involved in research on innovation management in long-term care and conducted studies on for example the development of a decision-support application for community nurses and case managers in dementia care.
