Dr. Iraida V. Carrion earned an MSW from Adelphi University and her PhD in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida. Dr. Carrion is an Associate Professor, a LCSW and a Florida qualified social work supervisor. She has practiced psychiatric, medical and in private practice settings in New York City, West Texas and in the Central Florida area.
Her career as a clinical Social Worker includes serving older adults and families coping with mental health disorders, terminal illnesses and grief and loss. Dr. Carrion has functioned as a clinical supervisor and program director in community-based agencies and schools as well as in hospice organizations. She has also assumed leadership roles as Chair of the MSW program, MSW Director of the MSW for the Sarasota-Manatee program and Bachelor of Social Work program at USF. Dr. Carrion has taught courses in the BSW, MSW and Doctoral program. Additionally, she has developed MSW online courses and Educational Abroad Programs to Northeast India and to Alicante, Barcelona,Granada and Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Carrion's research addresses the implications of health care practices involving Latinos as well as complex systems of care delivery. She has over 50 published peer-reviewed journal articles and four book chapters regarding immigrant health, cancer and end of life issues within the Latino community. She has presented in numerous peer-reviewed international conferences as well as national and state conferences. Dr. Carrion is on the editorial board of Journal of Social Work in End of Life & Palliative Care and the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
In 2018, she was named a Gerontological Society of America Fellow and the Puerto Rican Leader award by the Bronx President of New York City. In 2019, Dr. Carrion was selected a Fulbright Specialist sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and received the USF, Academic Excellence Award.
