Jacqueline L. Angel, PhD is the Wilbur J. Cohen Professor of Health and Social Policy and Professor of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. She did her postdoctoral training in the Rutgers/Princeton mental health services research program and The Pennsylvania State University Program in Demography of Aging. Her research examines health and retirement issues in the U.S., with a focus on older minorities, immigration processes, the impact of social policy on the Hispanic population and Mexican-American families. At UT Austin, she is a Principal Investigator on the NIH/NIA, Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE), the first large-scale investigation of the longitudinal health of older Mexican Americans in the Southwestern United States, Texas Resource Center on Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) Research Education Core, and the Conference Series on Aging in the Americas: U.S. and Mexico. Dr. Angel is author/coauthor/co-editor of 100 journal articles, 40 chapters, and 14 books/edited collections. Some of her recent publications include: Older Mexicans and Latinos in the United States: Where Worlds Meet (Springer Nature), Understanding the Context of Cognitive Aging: Mexico and the United States (Springer Nature), Loss of Autonomy: Likely Dementia and Living Arrangement Transitions Among Mexicans and Mexican Americans (The Gerontologist), Paying the Price: The Cost of Caregiving for Mexican-American Families (Public Policy and Aging Report), Duration of Dementia and Social Service Use in the U.S.-Born and Foreign-Born Mexican-American Population (Journal of Aging and Health), and “Privatizing Responsibility for Old Age Security.” Public Policy and Aging Report. Angel has received several recognitions for mentoring and research on aging, among which are: the 2023 GSA James Jackson Outstanding Mentoring Award and the 2024 Section on Aging and the Life Course Matilda White Riley Distinguished Scholar Award; She was elected GSA Fellow in 2000.
