Dr Di Gessa is a Lecturer in Data Science in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London and a co-investigator of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Dr Di Gessa’s research applies advanced quantitative research methods to longitudinal data to investigate the social challenges presented by population ageing. In particular, he is interested in better understanding the social and demographic determinants of healthy ageing to tackle factors that impact older people’s health status and contribute to their increased well-being. Dr Di Gessa focuses his research primarily on complex relationships between social engagement (including paid work, volunteering, and provision of informal care to partners and grandchildren) and mental and physical health in mid and later life. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Di Gessa has investigated the impact of COVID-19 and associated viral suppression measures (e.g. furlough scheme and shielding) on mental health, socio-economic outcomes, and access to healthcare, particularly among older people. Dr Di Gessa has extensive collaborations with colleagues from academia (in the UK and Europe) as well as non-academic partners including NGOs, independent research organisations, and government. Giorgio has a sustained track record of raising research funds and has been a co-investigator of research projects bringing over 16 million GB pounds. The impact of his work is demonstrated by his publication record (over 60 publications, including 25 first-authored articles in top international peer-reviewed journals). His commitment to research excellence is also reflected in a strong record of national and international conference presentations and widespread dissemination of findings including invited addresses and official briefings.
