Flavia Andrade is a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Social Work. This year, she will be the acting director for the Women & Gender in Global Perspectives at Illinois. She has a BA in Economics and an MA in Demography from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), an MS in Population Health, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). Flavia Andrade is a Fellow of the GSA. Her interdisciplinary research contributes to understanding older adults' health status and trajectories in Latin America and the Caribbean. In particular, her research addresses how demographic, epidemiological, and nutritional changes and social disparities influence health, wellbeing, and quality of life. These effects are especially important because they disproportionately affect poorer and less well-educated individuals. Findings from her research highlight disparities in gender, educational background, and morbidity levels. Results provide critical information for developing interventions and public policies and addressing the economic costs of growing obesity, diabetes, and chronic conditions.
