Dr. Kiel is a Senior Scientist in the Marcus Institute for Aging Research Musculoskeletal Research Center at Hebrew SeniorLife, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Past President of ASBMR. Dr. Kiel conducts research on musculoskeletal diseases affecting older adults who are part of the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, including lifestyle and multi-omic determinants of osteoporosis and fractures, and sarcopenia. His current work focuses on the genetics of bone microarchitecture phenotypes, effects of adiposity on the skeleton, the role of the gut microbiome on skeletal structure, and fracture prediction using HR-pQCT. He has also performed multiple randomized controlled clinical trials to test the efficacy of treatments for osteoporosis and falls. One of these trials, will be evaluating the effect of a synbiotic on skeletal metabolism and bone density in post-menopausal women. As part of his work in skeletal genetics, Dr. Kiel leads the core group who created the IFMRS Musculoskeletal Knowledge Portal, leads the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research on Genetic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Musculoskeletal Working Group, and leads the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) working group on Bone Mineralization. He is on the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Arthritis, and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at NIH, and serves on the Clinical Trials Advisory Panel for the NIA.
