Jan Baars, PhD, FGSA, FASS (he/him/his)

Jan Baars studied social sciences and philosophy in Amsterdam, Berkely and Bielefeld (Germany) . He is Professor of Humanistic Gerontology at the University for Humanistic Studies in Utrecht and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of the Social Sciences and the Humanities at Tilburg University. He has written many articles and authored or (co)edited around twenty volumes in several languages, initially about Critical Theory (Adorno, Horkheimer, Habermas), later about Aging Studies. His most recent book is "Long Lives are for the Rich. Aging, the Life Course, and Social Justice' (Routledge.2023). Other books include 'Aging and the Art of Living' (Johns Hopkins University Press). Co-edited volumes include 'Ageing, Meaning, and Social Structure: Connecting Critical and Humanistic Gerontology'; 'Aging, Globalization and Inequality: the New Critical Gerontology' and 'Aging and Time: Multidisciplinary Perspectives'. He has contributed many articles to the major handbooks in the field of Aging Studies, especially about concepts of time, age and aging. He is Fellow of the British Academy of Social Science and the Gerontological Society of America. Having served as keynote lecturer at the World Congress and Regional Congresses of the International Association Gerontology and Geriatrics, he is a recipient of multiple awards and a teacher of Master classes at universities in Europe, the United States, New Zealand, South Africa and India.
