PARO Robots

PARO is an evidence-based neurological therapeutic robot that has been an FDA cleared Class II Medical Device in the US since 2009. PARO is built in an FDA regulated medical device manufacturing facility in Japan. PARO is recognized by CMS as biofeedback equipment. CMPRP grants for PARO are usually written as projects with a Quality of Care or Quality of Life improvement goal. PARO can be a welcome non-pharmacological intervention, behavior modification, or diversion. User engagement and interaction with PARO Artificial Intelligence generated behaviors can stimulate the same neurological response that produces positive physiological and psycho-social outcomes that are common in live Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) and Therapies (AAT) without the risks of live animals. PARO can be purchased and used by organizations, individuals, and families as a pet or comforting companion without a prescription. Properly trained animals are trained not to react with instinctual fight or flight responses. PARO does not have self-preservation instincts and cannot retaliate. Also, PARO greatly reduces the burdens of animal mistreatment, animal care, feeding, health maintenance, and grooming of a live animal. Animals are living creatures and can unintentionally carry pathogens, parasites and other detrimental organisms. Recent literature about zoonotic pathogen vectors have increased as greater awareness of wild and pet animal transmission or mutation concerns have emerged. Typical elder care symptoms from PTSD, dementia, or Alzheimers, such as wandering, self-isolation, anxiety, depression, aggression, loneliness, pet loss, agitation, boredom, grieving, and sundowning can be addressed by clinical or practical application of PARO interactions.
