I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Gerontology at Simon Fraser University under the supervision of Dr. Habib Chaudhury. My research interests are in the area of long-term care (LTC), life-enrichment, and social engagement, with particular interest in leisure experience for residents living with dementia in LTC. Informed by the theoretical context of person-centred care, I am interested in understanding the role of leisure activity in later life transitions, such as retirement, and in the lives of older adults with dementia or a chronic illness. Adopting a qualitative methodological approach, I plan to explore the activity experience of people with dementia in LTC and how the institutional environment (physical and social) can support meaningful engagement. I am also interested in disseminating and implementing evidence-based practices for planning and facilitating activities in the care home context.
Currently, I am working as part of a Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship in the project "Built Environmental Impact on Residents' Quality of Life and Staff Care Practices in a Long-Term Care Facility: Pre- and Post-relocation at the existing long-term care home and the innovative 'Village' Model in Comox, British Columbia." In this project, we are evaluating the built environment of the care home and its role in care interactions and residents’ quality of life in the context of the innovative Village model of care. Additionally, I work as a life enrichment volunteer at the Fair Haven Society Home in British Columbia and assist the leisure staff to carry out recreation programs.
