Shirin Vellani is a Doctoral prepared Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in specialized geriatric services. She earned her nursing education at the Aga Khan University in Pakistan and completed her Master’s in Nursing - Nurse Practitioner Certificate at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing (LSBFON), University of Toronto. In 2021, she earned her PhD in Nursing Science from the same institution, with a collaborative specialization in Aging, Palliative, and Supportive Care Across the Life Course. Her PhD project involved implementation of a tailored advance care planning intervention in older adults living with early-stage dementia and their care partners utilising a virtual platform. She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at McMaster University where she led a situational analysis project examining the integration of a palliative approach in Canadian long-term care homes. Her program of research utilizes a diversity, equity, and intersectionality lens and aims to develop and implement evidence-based knowledge to enhance the care experiences of diverse older adults through engagement in timely advance care planning discussions and enhancing knowledge of workforce to better provide culturally humble care to them.
Currently, she works as a Nurse Practitioner and Researcher in the Virtual Behavioral Medicine (VBM) Program at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network. The VBM program is a novel interdisciplinary model of care designed to address neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia in older adults living in long-term care homes.
In addition to her clinical and research work, Shirin is a facilitator for the Provincial Common Orientation through the Provincial Geriatric Leadership Organization, geared towards diverse health professionals involved in the care of older adults. She also holds an adjunct teaching appointment at the LSBFON, University of Toronto.
