Dr Judith Charlton is Professor Emeritus at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and former Director of MUARC and its World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Injury and Violence Prevention. Jude is the current Independent Chair of the National Road Safety Partnership Program which champions positive road safety culture in the workplace. She is engaged in many national and international research activities, collaborating with government bodies, health practitioners, transport and road safety industry partners and academics in Europe and North America. Jude has led a sustained program of research over two decades on older people’s safe mobility, child safety in cars and medical fitness to drive that has contributed to positive changes in Australia and internationally in safety policy, design and practice. Current and recent major international collaborations include: fitness-to-drive for licensing, vision impaired drivers, drivers with Traumatic Brain Injury, and a large cohort study of older drivers, the Ozcandrive/Candrive study. These projects examine the role of ageing, vision, cognition and physical functions in driving using state of the art driving simulators, instrumented vehicles and naturalistic driving methods. Jude has authored over 200 publications on road safety issues and has served on many scientific advisory groups and road safety committees, including the U.S. Transportation Research Board - Driver Medical Review and Co-Chair of Aging Gender and Mobility Sub-committees.
