Carol Holland is a Professor in Ageing within the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University, UK, and also Director of the university-wide Centre for Ageing Research (C4AR). Her previous roles include Director of Aston Research Centre for Healthy Ageing (ARCHA) and academic roles at Aston, Manchester, Warwick and Leeds Universities.
She is currently President of the British Society of Gerontology, the national learned society representing researchers in ageing across disciplines. Carol is a psychologist whose research focuses on applied impacts of cognitive and health psychology of ageing and models of frailty, for example, impacts of functional memory on ability to engage socially and so links to loneliness, or addition of psychological, social and environmental aspects of frailty to the more commonly measured physical aspects. She has particular interests in reduction of risk factors for frailty, cognitive decline and dementia across the lifespan.
She has several ongoing or recently completed projects focussing on frailty including cognitive and psychological frailty, on COVID-19 lockdown impacts, and on active engagement in later life. She is currently the lead for the International, Interdisciplinary network on Cognitive frailty (CFIN) (BBSRC and MRC funded), and also lead for a project examining implementation of smart digital tools for medication adherence support in social care recipients. Leading from her frailty work, Carol is now developing a range of measures to more holistically assess frailty and resilience in community samples of older people, including assessments of perceptions of the age friendliness of environments. Professor Holland works across disciplines and sectors, bringing together a range of expertise in projects addressing challenges of ageing. She supervises a range of PhD students in topics related to ageing and dementia, including several students conducting their PhD by distance learning located and working internationally.
