Dr. Armiel Suriaga is a tenure-earning assistant professor at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, born and raised in the Philippines. He is a proud Owl alum, completing his Ph.D. at Florida Atlantic University in 2021. Dr. Suriaga is a Harvard graduate, earning his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health in 2024.
His research bridges the intersection of public health, nursing, the social determinants of health, and health equity, focusing on substance use, misuse, and abuse, particularly opioids, cannabinoids, kratom, and ethanol. He is interested in understanding unhealthy drug use, the neuroscience of aging, geriatric pharmaco-epidemiological inquiry, and clinical gerontology.
Dr. Suriaga was recently selected by the National Institute on Aging/National Institute of Health for the prestigious Butler-Williams Scholarship program in 2024. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) also selected him as among the top 12 NDSN scholars in the country in 2023. Harvard University awarded Dr. Suriaga with an MPH-EPI Scholarship from 2022 to 2024. He was recognized as a faculty scholar by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and Johnson and Johnson, where he received funding for two years. He was also selected as a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America for Diversity, Mentoring, and Career Development in 2021.
While at FAU, Dr. Suriaga primarily teaches General Pathophysiology and Nursing Research. Upon his Ph.D. completion in 2021, he was awarded the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Excellence in Leadership Award, Excellence in Service Award, Excellence in Scholarship Award, and the Daisy Award. In 2022, he was a finalist for the Distinguished Teacher of the Year award at Florida Atlantic University. He also received the FAU CEL CON Faculty and Staff Strategic Excellence Awards in 2021, 2022, and 2024.
