Dr. Richards completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1976, a Master of Science degree from the University of Arizona in 1985, a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993, and five years of post-doctoral training in sleep, neuroscience, and clinical trials methods at the Little Rock, Arkansas VA Geriatric, Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). During her career she has held several faculty, administrative, and clinical positions including Director of the HCGNE at University of Pennsylvania, Co-Director of the HCGNE at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, endowed professorships at both the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and University of Pennsylvania, and University Professor at George Mason University. She has been a Senior Scientist and Research Professor at the University of Texas at Austin since 2017. Dr. Richards has been continuously federally funded, primarily by NIH but also by the VA since 1997. She has disseminated her work in over 150 publications. Her scientific focus has been on sleep in older adults, primarily those with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, her interest is in applying precision health strategies to improve sleep and behavioral symptoms, and delay cognitive decline in older adults.
