Dr. Goldie Byrd is Professor of Social Sciences and Health Policy and former Director of the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. At Wake Forest, she co-directs the Outreach Recruitment and Engagement Core for the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and she co-leads the outreach and engagement for the DAWN Alzheimer's research study. She is the former chair of biology, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she also founded the Center for Outreach in Alzheimer's Aging and Community Health. Dr. Byrd conducts research on the genetics of Alzheimer's disease in populations with African ancestry. She is particularly focused on the inclusion of diverse aging groups in and Alzheimer's disease research and clinical trials. Dr. Byrd has received numerous awards for her extensive community-based work that connects minoritized communities to research participation, as well as to local and federal resources as they experience Alzheimer's disease burden. She recently received the Bengt Winblad Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Philadelphia for significant contributions to Alzheimer's research and her lasting impact on the field.
