After graduating from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with her MSW, Bruna Cardoso Lopez worked for five years in both clinical and macro roles. These included work as a hospice social worker and bereavement coordinator, as well as work with immigrants and refugees. While working at the International Rescue Committee, she supervised graduate level interns and supported asylum seekers. In addition, she also provided employment coordination for recent arrivals through the Afghan Placement and Assistance (APA) program. Through this role, she formalized a desire to unveil the short- and long-term economic and health disparities associated with immigration legal status.
Lopez's interest in gerontology, particularly within the context of immigrant older adults, self-employment and entrepreneurship, and financial capability is deeply personal and professionally motivated. Having witnessed the challenges faced by immigrant populations in managing their finances, particularly those that are undocumented, she is driven to explore how financial stress and economic opportunities impact the well-being and retirement trajectories of older adults. At Boston College, Lopez has conducted research funded by AARP to show trends and disparities among self-employed older Americans, including Hispanic subgroups (e.g., Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, etc.). Within this realm, Bruna is also interested in enhancing racial and ethnic representation in secondary data analysis.
