Professor emeritus
University of Georgia
Athens, Georgia, United States
I first became a member of the GSA in 1974 while a graduate student at the University of Southern California. Dr. Ruth Weg, then the director of graduate education at the Andrus Gerontology Center, signed up all of the graduate students for student memberships courtesy of the Andrus Center. My areas of interest from the earliest days include social theory, film and, of course, aging. In 2010, I completed an interview project of U.S. Army general officers, all of whom came onto active duty during the Vietnam War and the last of whom retired in 2014. My film project culminated in a book, Social Life in the Movies, published in 2021 by Routledge. In December, 2023, I finished the 61st and final interview for a project on runners, aged 50 or older. The first paper from these interviews will be presented in Seattle at the 2024 GSA meetings.
