Professor of Clinical Medicine
Miami VA Healthcare System
Miami, Florida, United States
I am an experienced geriatrician and researcher, the Associate Director for Implementation and Outcomes Research in the Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), at the Miami VA Healthcare System. I am currently serving as the GRECC’s Interim Associate Director for Research. I am the Innovation Core PI for the Elizabeth Dole Center of Excellence for Veteran and Caregiver Research (EDCoE). I have been a PI or co-investigator on multiple projects, including multi-site studies. I have been funded by the VA, NIH, and DOD for implementing new care models for patients with dementia, stroke, diabetes, and heart failure, and their caregivers. My long-term goal is to improve the care for complex chronically ill patients and their caregivers. I also strive to reduce the burden of chronic diseases and reduce health disparities in high-need high-risk populations who have the greatest need for care but face the steepest challenges with access.
I have extensive expertise in developing successful, evidence-based innovative interventions for better management of patients with chronic conditions like dementia, and their caregivers. My projects are designed with the intent to empower patients and their caregivers to become informed partners in their health care, by helping them increase their problem-solving ability and by providing them needed resources. As the Innovation Core lead for the Elizabeth Dole Center of Excellence in Veteran and Caregiver Research (EDCoE), I am working with the site leads at the four participating sites and multiple operational partners, using a hybrid implementation/effectiveness approach.
