Robert J. Maiden, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Gerontology Program at Alfred University. Alfred University designated Dr. maiden the director of the Gerontology Program in 1984. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology (1980) and master’s degree in developmental psychology (1974) at the New School for Social Research; he received his bachelor’s degree, majoring in English Literature at the University of Michigan (1968).
The Philadelphia Geriatric Center in 1978 awarded him a pre-doctoral clinical fellowship in Geropsychology. M. Powell Lawton mentored him. Under his astute supervision, he honed his clinical skills and research interests as a scientist-practitioner focused on applied psychology. He has a part-time clinical practice and has been honored to receive awards for his scholarship, research, and as a practitioner.
Dr. Maiden’s peers elected him a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and President of the State Society on Aging of New York in 2003, and a Fellow of the Association of Gerontologist in Higher Education in 2008. He was active in Division 20 of American Psychological Association and served on its continuing education committee from 2005-2007. He has been a participant of GSA since 1978.
Widly published, Dr. Maiden has authored or co-authored over150 articles, abstracts, book chapters, book reviews and co-authored a book that focused on the political, sociological, and psychological daily lives or rural older Americans. He is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Aging & Human Development and the Gerontology & Geriatrics Eduation. He is a founding member and Vice President of the Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council (AGEC).
In his spare time, Dr Maiden enjoys sports and reading novels. He was a good shortstop until he broke his elbow playing on the Alfred University coed softball team and has since taken up golf.
