Dr. Walston completed Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology training at Johns Hopkins University in 1993. HIs clinical work in Geriatric Medicine included inpatient hospital, skilled and nursing home, rehabilitation, and outpatient clinic care for older adults. He worked early on in his research career to better identify a definition of physical frailty with his collegues, followed by extensive research into the aging-related biology that increased risk of physical frailty as well as related adverse health outcomes. He has directed the Johns Hopkins Older Americans Independence Center since 2008, as well as the Biology of Healthy Aging Program. Recent NIH funded center grants on physical resiliency and uses of artificial intelligence and technology has facilitated improved care in older adults. Over the past 25 years, he has helped move forward clinical care for frail older adults and faciliate biological pathways that influence accelerated aging in fraitly. In addition, he has helped over 25 faculty members at Johns Hopkins in general and specialized surgery, internal medicine and multiple subspecialties, nursing, and biological and clinical research improve the care of older adults.
