Mary Mitchell, Director, Seattle King County Area Agency on Aging, a Seattle native and Garfield High School alumna, exemplifies dedication and expertise in her professional journey. As the daughter of a US Army Veteran and a prominent figure in Seattle’s public service sector, she embodies a profound sense of service and commitment.
With 33 years of experience, Mary’s career is distinguished by her focus on organizational development, conflict resolution, and the advancement of racial and social justice. She has integrated racial equity training into staff meetings and utilized data to address service delivery disparities, consistently demonstrating her leadership and expertise.
Mary’s career commenced at the Seattle Police Department as an Administrative Specialist. During her 11-year tenure in Parking Enforcement, she earned a BS in Business Administration and an MBA. She co-led SPD’s Change Team, presented for the Citizen’s Academy, and facilitated discussions on race. Additionally, she is a certified mediator with the King County Inter-Local Conflict Resolution Group.
Mary advanced to the role of Deputy Director within the Consumer Protection Division of Seattle’s Department of Finance and Administration Services. There, she developed the Racial Equity Toolkit and explored strategies for enhancing diversity through the Marijuana Equity Program.
After 23 years at the Seattle Police Department, Mary transitioned to lead the largest Area Agency on Aging in Washington State, overseeing programs that significantly impact the community.
Recently, Mary participated in the 2024 USAging Policy Briefing and Capitol Hill Day, advocating for investments in programs that support older Americans in aging in place. Her ability to build relationships with policymakers at all levels underscores her role as a key player in driving positive change.
Outside of work, Mary enjoys time with her granddaughter, “Lady Bug,” and riding her motorcycle, Big Blue.
