Dr. Trudy Gaillard is a Tenured Professor and the Vanessa Von Wertheim Endowed Chair in Chronic Disease Prevention and Care in the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She currently conducts research focusing on health disparities, metabolic syndrome, mild cognitive impairment, and chronic disease prevention using lifestyle interventions in minorities.
Dr. Gaillard’s in the Principal Investigator of a $2.9 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (Award#: R24AG067951), Florida Statewide Registry for Aging Studies. This tri-institutional collaboration (Florida International University, University of Central Florida, and University of Florida) seeks to increase the recruitment and retention of culturally diverse older adults by leveraging intergenerational influences of older adults and their adult children by engaging in healthy conversations about research and aging. The overarching goal of the study is to recruit participants into a healthy aging registry.
Dr. Gaillard attended Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1986). She later earned a Master of Health Sciences from New Jersey City University (1990) and a Master of Science in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University (1994). She earned her Ph.D. in Exercise Science from The Ohio State University (2005).
Dr. Gaillard has held several research and teaching and positions. She was Assistant Professor of Medicine Research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in the Department of Internal Medicine, where she was the program director for the Prevention of Diabetes in African Americans Program and the program coordinator for the Community Diabetes Partnership. Before joining FIU, she was Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Gaillard is an advocate for equitable representation in minority health research. She continues to serve as a mentor to faculty and students interested in health disparities research and chronic disease prevention.
