Dr Brian Beach is a Senior Research Fellow in Social Policy and Gerontology at University College London (UCL) in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, where he has been a member of the research team for the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) since July 2021. He also holds a position at Karolinska Institutet since April 2024 in the Division of Insurance Medicine at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. He is currently conducting analyses of ELSA and Swedish register data looking at issues related to working lives, unpaid caregiving, and cognitive health.
Prior to UCL, Brian worked for eight years at the International Longevity Centre UK, where he conducted research on a range of topics related to population ageing, with his main expertise relating to employment in later life. He has worked in the field of ageing since 2006 and has been an active member on various strategic and advisory groups with universities, the voluntary sector, and government, including three appearances before Select Committees in the UK Parliament to provide evidence.
Brian received his doctorate in 2016 from the University of Oxford, where he explored the labour market behaviour of older workers in England and other European countries. Prior to this, he worked in the International Affairs office of AARP in Washington, DC, where he helped organise international dialogues related to population ageing, including with the United Nations Programme on Ageing.
Prior to his position at AARP, he completed the TransAtlantic Masters Program in Political Science through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) and L’Università degli Studi di Siena (Italy). He speaks French and Italian, with competence in Danish, German, Spanish, and Swedish.
