Charles P. Hoy-Ellis, PhD, MSW, LICSW, is a clinician-researcher dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities, with a particular focus on midlife and older adults. He holds an undergraduate degree in psychology, a master's in clinical/contextual social work, and a doctorate in social welfare. His extensive direct practice experience as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker spans over two decades, providing direct clinical social work services to the LGBTQ+ community.
Dr. Hoy-Ellis's scholarship is deeply intertwined with his practice, addressing significant health and mental health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ populations due to structural, individual, and interpersonal stigma. He leverages his expertise to develop and implement culturally sensitive interventions that target both the root causes and direct effects of these disparities.
With over 15 years of experience teaching diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI), Dr. Hoy-Ellis educates undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral-level students, as well as professionals and service providers. His role as Project Director for Interventions and Training at the Goldsen Institute involves promoting knowledge transfer from basic science and clinical trials to multigenerational practice, services, education, and policy. This unit provides training in educational, healthcare, and social services settings on best practices for culturally responsive, evidence-based care for LGBTQ+ older adults.
Since 2009, Dr. Hoy-Ellis has been involved with the Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, and Sexuality/Gender Study (NHAS), the first federally funded longitudinal project examining the health and well-being of 2,450 LGBTQ+ adults aged 50 and older across the United States. The NHAS, part of the Goldsen Institute, is currently in its sixth wave of data collection.
