Dr. Kavanaugh is a professor of social work and licensed clinical social worker with expertise in multidisciplinary health settings treating neurological disorders and disablilty including Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s disease (HD) and Spinal cord injury. Her research is informed by her clinical experience, developing translation and applied research to improve QOL in family caregivers, with an emphasis on children and youth as caregivers ‘young carers’.
Dr. Kavanaugh’s research has been funded by federal, state and non-profit organizations including the National Institutes for Health (NIH), Administration on Community living (ACL), the ALS Association (ALSA), and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation (EDF). Her research is community engaged and focused on building partnerships with health care, disease organizations, state, and federal agencies.
As one of the few experts on young carers in the United States, Dr. Kavanaugh has published and presented nationally and internationally on her evidence-based interventions for young carers targeting caregiving educating and skills (YCare program), sleep, and quality of life across diverse care populations. Dr. Kavanaugh is also the president of Global Neuro YCare, a global non-profit providing education, advocacy and support for children and youth in families with neurological disorders.
