Dr. Jin hui Joo is a geriatric psychiatrist and faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She was Associate Professor on the faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital where she was a clinician and researcher for 10
years before joining MGH. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, has a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her psychiatry training and research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to embarking on her medical training, Dr. Joo received a Master’s degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy where she focused on U.S.- East Asian relations. Dr. Joo has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute on Aging to conduct health services research in depression and the intersection between depression and cognitive disorders. Her work consists of understanding existing mental health disparities and needs to improve access to mental health services among underserved populations such as low-income white and minoritized older adults. She uses quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the context, meaning and help seeking of mental health that informs intervention development. She has developed non-traditional, community-based and community-engaged depression care interventions that use paraprofessionals such as peer coaches to engage populations that experience persistent barriers to access. She has published articles on disparities in psychotherapy, depression coping, dementia support for caregivers, mental health services in primary care settings, use of paraprofessionals such as peer and community health workers in mental health service delivery for ethnically diverse groups, and cultural competency in geriatric mental health training.
