Dr. Jenkins is a Clinician Scientist focused on developing community-engaged data driven interventions impacting physical and mental health outcomes in older adults by leveraging quantitative and qualitative methodologies. She holds a bachelors’ degree in biology and masters’ degrees in medical science and nursing. During her dual doctoral (PhD-DNP) education, she served as a medical caregiver for her grandmother with dementia, a Psychiatric Registered Nurse and research assistant/resident on several aging-related projects in pain and dementia led by Drs. Janiece Taylor, Sarah Szanton and Haera Han. With NIH TL1 and NIA R36 predoctoral funding, her dissertation’s purpose was to determine the needs of older adults with co-occurring mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early dementia and physical disabilities with or without care partners (CAPABLE-Family). With the support of co-mentors in the Health Services and Outcomes Research For Aging Populations T32 at Johns Hopkins, Drs. Quincy Samus and Katherine Miller, Jenkins was awarded a 2024 AWARD Network Pilot Award for her proposal, “Use of the Health Equity Framework to Characterize Multi-Level Factors Correlated with Pain and the Receipt of the Direct Care Workforce in Older Adults with Dementia.” She will also examine paid care utilization and disparities in access to pain treatment for persons living with dementia (PLWD). This serves as the basis for an implementation research study to determine the needs and assets of persons with dementia regarding pain management, and identify adoption and implementation outcomes for clinicians and the direct care workforce. Jenkins is a community-based Primary Care Provider (Adult/Gero) in assisted living, home care and office-based settings and is a Clinical Dementia Specialist Telecollaborator for the MIND at Home Study. With multiple advanced degrees and honed knowledge, she will continue as a mixed-methods Clinician Scientist working in the community while developing interventions in health equity, aging/dementia, and pain.
