Michelle M. Hilgeman, Ph.D., FGSA, (she/her) is a Senior Psychologist Clinician Investigator and Associate Chief of Staff for the Research Service at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. She holds an academic appointment in The University of Alabama’s Department of Psychology and is an Affiliate Investigator at the Birmingham/Atlanta Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). Dr. Hilgeman’s work examines the effectiveness and implementation of evidence-based interventions designed to reduce psychological distress, enhance social connection, and improve clinical and functional outcomes for veterans and care partners at increased risk of inequities in health. For example, two current projects are: 1) a hybrid implementation-effectiveness clinical trial of Montessori-based approaches to resident-directed care in 8 VA Community Living Centers, and 2) evaluation of the PRIDE in All Who Served health promotion group for LGBTQ+ Veterans currently available in more than 65 VA Medical Centers. Her work has been supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development, Health Services R&D, the National Institute on Aging, and operations support from the VA Innovation Ecosystem, Office of Health Equity, LGBTQ+ Health, and Office of Rural Health.
